British writer and journalist Jamie Bartlett is an authority on internet trends and the use of social media. Whilst he may specialise in writing about technical and digital subjects Bartlett is keen to make these subjects accessible to the wider public, as lives become increasingly influenced by internet use and advancements. Bartlett has written for The Daily Telegraph and The Spectator and worked on a two-part BBC 2 series about how connectivity is resulting in political turbulence, called The Secrets of Silicon Valley.
A specialist on the Dark Web and the extent of its reach Bartlett’s first book The Dark Net explored the hidden internet subcultures using the web and their assimilation into the mainstream. This was also the focus of a TED talk, called How the Dark Web Is Going Mainstream, which has been viewed over 5m times. He has since released two further books, Radicals, about the disruptive individuals changing the world, and The People vs Tech which discusses the idea that the internet is a threat to democracy.
Bartlett worked until recently as the Director of the Centre for the Analysis of Social Media at the UK’s leading think-tank Demos and talks regularly at international conferences exploring future trends and data protection. His most recent venture is a BBC podcast called The Missing Crypto Queen, focussing on corruption in the world of cryptocurrencies.
