About

Jamie Trevor Oliver, born on May 27, 1975, in Clavering, Essex, began his culinary journey in his parents’ pub and restaurant, The Cricketers. He furthered his education at Westminster Technical College, earning a National Vocational Qualification in home economics. His early career included a pastry chef role at Antonio Carluccio’s Neal Street restaurant, where he honed his skills in Italian cuisine and worked alongside mentor Gennaro Contaldo. He then moved to the River Cafe in Fulham as a sous-chef, where he was discovered by the BBC in 1997 after an unscripted appearance in a documentary. This discovery marked a turning point in his career.

In 1999, Oliver gained widespread public recognition with the debut of his BBC Two series, “The Naked Chef,” accompanied by a bestselling cookbook. His casual style and emphasis on simple, fresh ingredients resonated with audiences. This early success led to subsequent seasons and an invitation to prepare lunch for Prime Minister Tony Blair. In 2002, he moved to Channel 4, launching “Jamie’s Kitchen,” a documentary series that chronicled the establishment of his Fifteen restaurant. This venture was designed to train disadvantaged young adults in the culinary arts, reflecting his commitment to social impact alongside his commercial endeavors.

Throughout his career, Oliver has consistently championed food education and healthy eating. In 2005, he initiated the “Feed Me Better” campaign, advocating for improved school meals in Britain, a movement that gained government backing and significantly impacted public policy. His efforts were recognized when he was named “Most Inspiring Political Figure of 2005” in a Channel 4 poll and received the 2010 TED Prize for his campaigning work. Beyond his television shows and social initiatives, Oliver has published over 30 cookbooks, becoming the second-best-selling British author and the best-selling British non-fiction author, with over 14.55 million books sold by February 2019. Despite the closure of his Jamie Oliver Restaurant Group in 2019, Oliver has continued to open new restaurants, including Jamie Oliver Catherine Street in London (2023) and Jamie’s Italian Belgrade in Serbia (2024), maintaining his presence in the culinary world.
