The iconic Jane Fonda is an award-winning actress, political activist, environmentalist, feminist, aerobics guru, writer and former sex kitten and fashion model who has been working in the film industry for seven decades. She has had countless accolades throughout her remarkable career, including two Oscars, two BAFTAs and seven Golden Globes. She is best known for her starring roles in the movies Barbarella, On Golden Pond, and 9 to 5. In 1982 she released her first exercise video, Jane Fonda’s Workout, which went on to become the highest-selling VHS of all time. She retired from acting in 1991 but returned to the screen in 2005 with the hit comedy, Monster-in-Law. In 2009 she returned to Broadway after a 49-year absence earning a nomination for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for 33 Variations. More recently, she has had huge acclaim for the HBO series, The Newsroom, and for the Netflix comedy series, Grace and Frankie.
Fonda’s father was the Hollywood legend, Henry Fonda, and her brother was the cult actor Peter Fonda. Her niece, Bridget Fonda, is best known for starring in Single White Female. Away from acting, Fonda was a very visible political activist during the Vietnam War, earning the nickname “Hanoi Jane” and finding herself effectively blacklisted from Hollywood. She has also protested the Iraq War and violence against women. In 2005, she co-founded the Women’s Media Center, an organisation that works to amplify the voices of women in the media through advocacy, media and leadership training, and the creation of original content. Fonda’s charitable works have focused on youth and education, adolescent reproductive health, environment, human services, and the arts. She founded the Jane Fonda Foundation in 2004.
