Ji-young Kang is a South Korean pop singer and actress; her popularity is reflected in her 408k followers on Instagram. She is perhaps most famous as a member of the South Korean all girl group called Kara. She was with the group from 2008-2014 then left to pursue a career in acting. She is also known as Jiyoung or JY. She was born in 1994 in Paju, South Korea. She went to Bongilcheon Middle School and Muhak Women’s High School before she attended Sungkyunkwan University. She has lived in both Japan and South Korea.
Jiyoung made her debut as a singing professional at the young age of fifteen. With the group Kara she worked on their first studio album titled ‘The First Bloooooming’ in 2007. In 2014 it was announced that Jiyoung would leave the band to train in acting and language skills in London. She moved on to work as an actress in Japan and was initially in the live action of ‘Hell Teacher Nube’ with the role of Yukime.
She has since been in a variety of films including ‘Dosukoi Sukehira’, ‘Tokyo Ghoul’s’, ‘Reon’ and ‘Assassination Classroom’. TV Drama series’ that she has appeared in include ‘Orphan Black:7 Genes’, ‘Doctor-X S4’ and ‘Whispers from a Crime Scene.
Musically – in 2015 Sony Music announced her debut as a solo singer working with the name JY. Her first single was ‘The Last Farewell’ and was positively received. In 2016 she released her debut solo EP as JY. The EP, called Radio, had 3 tracks and two of the tracks had music videos.
