John Joseph Harrington, born on October 21, 1978, in Portland, Oregon, established his athletic foundation early, excelling in high school football. His collegiate career at the University of Oregon was particularly distinguished, where he played quarterback for the Ducks and earned the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year award in 2001. During his senior season, he achieved 2,415 passing yards and 23 touchdowns, concluding his college tenure with an impressive 25–3 record. Harrington’s academic pursuits also reflected his commitment, as he maintained a 3.23 GPA while majoring in business administration. He was recognized as a first-team All-American and finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 2001, a campaign highlighted by a billboard in Times Square. His exceptional performance led him to be featured on the cover of EA Sports’ NCAA Football 2003 edition, and he earned the nickname “Captain Comeback” for his ability to lead game-winning drives.
Harrington was drafted third overall by the Detroit Lions in the 2002 NFL draft. Over his seven-season NFL career, he also played for the Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons, and New Orleans Saints. While his professional tenure was marked by varying team dynamics and expectations, he consistently demonstrated resilience and leadership. After his NFL career, Harrington returned to Portland, Oregon, engaging in various post-football endeavors. He worked as an NFL and college football commentator for Fox Sports Radio and served as a color analyst for Oregon Ducks football games on the Oregon Sports Network. He also became a college football analyst for Fox College Football and a part-time general assignment reporter for KGW Television.
Beyond sports and media, Harrington is actively involved in philanthropy, having established the Harrington Family Foundation in 2003.
