Sensational young sailor Johanna Bergqvist has one main aim – for Team Bergqvist to become the best team in the world in sailing match racing. Having reached the second highest position in the Women’s Match Racing world rankings in 2018, Bergqvist has said her team will keep going until they reach the top spot, and has also expressed her wish to compete against the best male sailors in the world by breaking into the men’s circuit. After starting at 117th place in the rankings, the team has risen steadily over the last couple of years, reaching the top five after impressive results including second place in the 2018 Women’s International Match Racing Series in Helsinki.
Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, Bergqvist began her sailing career when she was 8 years old at Hjuviks Båtklubb boat club, and started competing in the optimist. Away from the water, Bergqvist has studied for an engineering degree but her true passion has always been sailing, and she has already picked up 11 National Championship medals in Optimist, European and match racing.
As skipper of Team Berqvist – which also includes her sister Isabelle Bergqvist, Julia Carlsson and Johanna Thiringer – Berqvist is the driving force and engine that keeps the team going, and after already taking the team a long way in short space of time, her goals of domination in match racing may just come true.
