John Carpenter is the multi-talented, American director, musician, screenwriter, editor, film producer and composer.
Despite the fact that Carpenter’s work spans all kinds of topics and ideas, he is most commonly associated with horror, action and science fiction of the ’70s and ’80s.
Although John enjoys great critical acclaim today, his early work was in fact a commercial failure. However, since then, his work has been placed among the list of must-see cult classics. These include, 1974’s Dark Star, 1976’s Assault on Precinct 13, 1982’s The Thing, 1983’s Christine, 1986’s Big Trouble in Little China, 1987’s Prince of Darkness, 1988’s They Live and finally 1995’s In the Mouth of Madness.
Other bigger and slightly more well known films that you may recognise from John Carpenter, include the Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York and Starman. All of these were released in the late 70’s to early 80’s and did very well at the box office. In fact, Halloween was so good that it became a franchise in 2018, with the release of Halloween II.
Aside from his film work, John is also recognised as an achieved composer. In fact, he has actually composed most of the music for all his films. In 1998, John won a Saturn Award for Best Music, in his movie, Vampires.
Outside film, John has been behind the release of 3 LPs, called Lost Themes released in 2015, Lost Themes II released in 2016 and Anthology: Movie Themes 1974-1998, released in 2017.
