Canadian wide receiver John Metchie III has overcome adversity and made his name over 1,800 miles south, playing for the University of Alabama’s football team, the Crimson Tide. In early 2022, however, after three successful seasons with the Tide, Metchie announced his intention to forgo his senior year and declared himself ready for the 2022 NFL Draft. As a CFP Champion with All-SEC honours to his name, Metchie is rated as one of the SEC’s top wide receivers and has been projected as a first-round pick.
Born in Taiwan in July 2000, Metchie had an international upbringing, living in Ghana and Canada before moving to the United States and attending high school there. Even then, however, he remained on the move, attending schools in Maryland and New Jersey. While there, however, he suffered chest pains during the game and was found to have an enlarged heart, which required surgery. Sitting out of the game he loved in a country away from his parents was tough, but he came stronger than ever and was soon committing to play football for the University of Alabama. In his true freshman season, playing in all 13 of the Tide’s games and becoming the first wide receiver to win the Jon Cornish Trophy (awarded to Canada’s top college athletes).
After another successful season in 2021, Metchie, who has a reputation for pushing himself to become the best football player he can be, decided it was time to step up and announce himself for the NFL Draft.
