As part of the "go-go juice" given to Alana for pageants, June Shannon included Mountain Dew, a carbonated beverage with high caffeine and sugar content.
June Elizabeth ‘Mama June’ Shannon was born on August 10, 1979, in McIntyre, Georgia. Her public career began in 2011 when she and her youngest daughter, Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson, appeared on TLC’s reality series “Toddlers & Tiaras.” Alana’s distinctive personality and catchphrases led to the family receiving their own spin-off series, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” which premiered on August 8, 2012. The show, airing on TLC, documented the family’s daily life in rural McIntyre, Georgia, for four seasons, featuring June’s daughters Anna, Jessica, Lauryn, and Alana, along with Alana’s father Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson.
The series garnered significant viewership, with the premiere attracting 2.2 million viewers and later episodes drawing up to 3 million. Despite achieving high ratings, the show faced mixed critical reception, including accusations of “hicksploitation” and concerns about child exploitation. The program was abruptly canceled in October 2014, amidst reports of June Shannon’s association with a convicted sex offender, who had molested one of her daughters. Following the cancellation, Shannon continued in reality television, appearing on “Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars 4” (2015) with Mike Thompson, and later launching her own series on We TV, “Mama June: From Not to Hot” (2017).
“Mama June: From Not to Hot” chronicled Shannon’s significant weight loss after bariatric surgery and subsequent cosmetic procedures. This series was later rebranded as “Mama June: Road to Redemption” and “Mama June: Family Crisis,” reflecting her ongoing journey through drug addiction, legal issues, sobriety, and personal relationships. Her reality television work continued to feature her family and their experiences, maintaining her public profile and documenting various personal milestones, including her marriage to Justin Stroud in 2022 and subsequent formal ceremony in 2023.
