Ken Carter

Kenny Ray Carter was born on January 1, 1959, in Fernwood, Mississippi. Growing up, he was raised with a strong emphasis on academics but also developed an interest in sports. He pursued his education at Contra Costa College, San Francisco State, and George Fox University, where he played basketball. His coaching philosophy centered on the belief that strong academic performance is crucial for athletes, providing them with opportunities beyond sports.

Carter’s commitment to this philosophy gained national attention during his tenure as a high school basketball coach at Richmond High School from 1997 to 2002. In 1999, he famously locked out his undefeated team when they failed to honor academic and behavioral contracts. While initially met with community outrage, his firm stance was eventually praised for prioritizing education and values. This approach yielded significant results, as every player on his Richmond team during those years graduated. This true story became the inspiration for the 2005 film ‘Coach Carter,’ with Samuel L. Jackson portraying him.

Beyond high school basketball, Carter has diversified his career. He coached the SlamBall team Rumble, leading them to their first SlamBall Cup victory in the 2001-2002 season. He is also a business owner, operating Prime Time Publishing and Prime Time Sports, and is an author. In 2009, he established the Coach Carter Impact Academy in Marlin, Texas, a boarding school designed to promote self-discipline and academic excellence, incorporating a rigorous daily schedule and practical life skills training for its students. More recently, he has held roles as an assistant men’s basketball coach at collegiate levels, including Adams State University and Talladega College, contributing to team success and player development.
