Kim Appleby is the singer-songwriter perhaps best known for her part of the highly successful pop outfit, Mel & Kim. Hailing from Hackney, East London the duo were loved for their charm and their cutting edge music.
In 1986, Mel & Kim set the charts alight with their debut single, Showing Out. Following this track came the international hit Respectable, which made No. 1 in the UK and globally. Other memorable tracks from the duo include F.L.M. and That’s The Way It Is. Their LP went gold, selling 3.5 million copies internationally. Ultimately, Mel & Kim were nominated for a Best Newcomer award at The Brits.
Then, Kim decided that she wanted to take a break from being a recording artist to concentrate purely on songwriting for other acts. As a result, Kim spent some time in scandinavia, working with top songwriters like Anders Bagge, Michael Garvin and Shep Soloman.
Today, Kim works with the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors and for over a decade has chaired the Ivor Novello Awards’ judging panel. Kim is also deputy chair of the Ivor Novello awards committee and sits on the Songwriters Executive Committee at BASCA.
Aside from her musical career, Kim is a successful presenter and actress, having appeared on stage and screen, with many more exciting projects in the pipeline.
