Kuo Hsing-chun is a widely renowned international weightlifter, competing for Taiwan. She was born on 26th November 1993 and is an Olympian, four times World Champion, Universiade Champion two times, Asian Games Champion and four times Asian Champion of Amis descent. Hsing-chun started competing in the 58kg division until 2018 and moved on to 59 kg after the categories were changed. She is celebrated for setting 11 senior world records in competition.
The exceptional achievements of Hsing-chun are to her credit as she was born in the relatively resource starved city of Taitung.
Upon starting her training she had not rehab team, no nutrition planning and no adequate training equipment. She feels that more resources should be allocated to developing athletes and is passionate about the issue. In 2012, Hsing-chun competed in the Summer Olympics in London. She was placed 6th in the women’s 58 kg category and in the following year she won a gold medal in the World Weightlifting championships. Her total lift of 241 kg was a full 13 kg over the silver medallist. She secured a bronze medal in the 2015 World Weightlifting Championships after a disappointing year coming back from injury. In the 2016 Summer Olympics she won a bronze medal lifting a total of 231 kg. In the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships she secured the gold medal and in the 2018 World Weightlifting Championships Hsing-chun competed in the new 59kg category and won the gold medal, setting four senior world records in the event.
In the 2019 World Weightlifting Championships she further established herself as a key competitor by breaking two of her own world records in the women’s 59 kg category. Hsing-chun has tried to contribute back to her community donating from her own personal prize money to buy an ambulance for her local hospital. Her ambition is to compete at the Tokyo Olympics.
