About

Laurence Tomashoff, known professionally as Larry Thomas, was born in 1956 or 1957 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City to an observant Jewish family of Russian and Romanian background. His parents divorced, and he moved to California with his mother and sister when he was 11. Initially pursuing journalism in college, Thomas transitioned to acting after attending an acting class. Before his acting career gained widespread recognition, he held various jobs, including a bail bondsman and a court investigator, providing him with a diverse range of life experiences.

Thomas achieved significant fame for his guest role as Yev Kassem, often referred to as ‘The Soup Nazi,’ in Seinfeld’s 1995 episode “The Soup Nazi.” His portrayal of the strict soup stand owner, complete with a military uniform and an improvised line, “No soup for you!”, garnered him a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series in 1996. He reprised this memorable role in the series’ final episode in 1998. This character’s enduring popularity led to continuous public appearances and roles that often played on or referenced his Seinfeld persona. Beyond this, Thomas also appeared as a casino dealer in the 1997 film “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery,” sharing a scene with Mike Myers and Robert Wagner.

Throughout his career, Thomas has amassed over 70 acting credits, demonstrating his versatility across various genres and platforms. Notable roles include playing Bob Galloway in the 2004 “Drake & Josh” episode “2 Idiots and a Baby,” and a Saddam Hussein lookalike in an episode of “Arrested Development” in 2006. He also took on the controversial role of Osama bin Laden in Uwe Boll’s 2007 film “Postal.” Beyond acting, Thomas has ventured into directing and writing, contributing to the TV series “Dads!” in 2017. He also actively engages with fans through autograph signings, public appearances as the Soup Nazi, and personalized video messages on platforms like Cameo.
