About

Mark Sayers McGrath was born on March 15, 1968, in Hartford, Connecticut, and later moved to Newport Beach, California, at the age of eight. He attended Corona del Mar High School and subsequently majored in communications at the University of Southern California, graduating in 1990. After his college years, McGrath co-founded the band Sugar Ray in Orange County, California, in 1992, alongside Rodney Sheppard, Murphy Karges, and Stan Frazier. The band signed with Atlantic Records in 1994, achieving their initial significant success in 1997 with the song “Fly.” His rising profile led to appearances on national magazine covers such as Rolling Stone and Spin, along with frequent features on MTV and VH1. In 1998, People magazine recognized him as the “Sexiest Rocker.”

Beyond his musical career, McGrath diversified into television, becoming a co-host for the program “Extra” in September 2004, a role he maintained until July 2008 when he opted to prioritize his music. He also hosted the third season of “Don’t Forget the Lyrics!” in 2010 and the second season of “Killer Karaoke.” McGrath has made numerous acting appearances, including a notable participation in the 2002 “Scooby-Doo” movie with Sugar Ray and guest spots in TV series like “Law and Order: SVU,” “The Office,” “The Neighbors,” and “Workaholics.” In 2011, he competed on “The Celebrity Apprentice Season 4,” finishing in tenth place. He has also served as a guest judge for “American Idol” auditions in 2005. McGrath continues to explore various entertainment avenues, including hosting and narrating documentary television series such as “Dark Side of the 90s” and “Dark Side of the 2000s.”

His career also includes organizing music tours, such as the SummerLand Tour in 2012 with Everclear’s Art Alexakis, and later forming the “Under the Sun Tour” in 2013. McGrath occasionally tours with The Beach Boys and maintains a presence as a DJ, hosting a show on SiriusXM’s 90s on 9. He has remained active in reality television, competing on “Celebrity Big Brother” in 2018, where he placed third, and later “The Masked Singer” in 2021 as the wild card contestant “Orca.” He married Carin Kingsland on September 24, 2012, and they have two children, twins born on April 29, 2010.
