AAC Champion Matt Rhule is a former NFL player and present day head coach of the Carolina Panthers. In 2019, he was named Big 12 Coach of the Year and AP Big 12 Coach of the Year while head coach of the The Baylor Bears, who finished the regular season with a record of 11–1.
Rhule was hired by Albright College to coach the linebackers after his playing career at Penn State came to an end. Before being hired at Temple as a defensive line coach in 2006, Rhule had stops at Buffalo, UCLA, and Western Carolina after one year at Albright. He became Temple’s offensive coordinator in 2008. Rhule was on the coaching staff of the New York Giants in 2012, before becoming head coach at Temple the following year. He was appointed head coach by Baylor University in 2017.
Rhule was chosen to lead the Carolina Panthers as their sixth head coach on January 7, 2020. The Panthers defence greatly improved under Rhule’s leadership, moving from allowing the second-most points in 2019 to ranking #15 in the league. Rhule’s NFL head coaching debut against the Las Vegas Raiders ended in a 30-34 loss on September 13, 2020. On September 27, 2020, Rhule defeated the Los Angeles Chargers by a score of 21-16 to earn his first victory as an NFL head coach. Rhule guided the Panthers to a 5-11 record and third-place finish in the NFC South in his first season as head coach.
