Maura Tierney

Maura Tierney, born on February 3, 1965, in Boston, Massachusetts, is an American actress with a career spanning several decades. Raised in the Hyde Park district, she is the eldest of three children to Pat, a real estate agent, and Joseph M. Tierney, a city councilman. Tierney initially pursued her education at New York University before transferring to the Circle-in-the-Square theater school. Her early career involved various stage plays, including “Baby with the Bathwater” and “Danny and the Deep Blue Sea.” In the late 1980s, she relocated to the West Coast, where she secured minor roles in TV movies and made episodic appearances in shows such as “Growing Pains,” “Family Ties,” and “Law & Order.” Her progression in film began with a minor role in “The Linguini Incident” (1991) and a leading role in the B-movie spoof “Dead Women in Lingerie” (1991).

Tierney achieved significant recognition in television through her role as Lisa Miller, a smart yet insecure newswriter, on the comedy series “NewsRadio” from 1995 to 1999. During this period, she also expanded her film career with roles in comedies and thrillers like “Liar Liar” (1997), “Primal Fear” (1996), “Primary Colors” (1998), and “Instinct” (1999). A pivotal turning point in her career was joining the critically acclaimed medical drama “ER” in 1999, where she played Nurse, and later Dr., Abby Lockhart for nearly a decade, departing in 2009. Her work on “ER” earned her an Emmy Award nomination. She continued to take on diverse roles in art-house films, such as “Scotland, Pa.” (2001), directed by her then-husband Billy Morrissette, and the mystery thriller “Insomnia” (2002) alongside Al Pacino and Robin Williams.

In the 2010s, Tierney maintained a steady presence in television with recurring roles in series like “Rescue Me” (2009, 2011) and “The Good Wife” (2012–2013). Her portrayal of Helen Solloway in the mystery drama “The Affair” (2014–2019) earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. She also appeared in films such as “Beautiful Boy” (2018) with Steve Carell and Timothy Chalamet, and “The Report” (2019). More recently, she starred in “American Rust” (2021-2024) and joined the cast of “Law & Order” as Lieutenant Jessica Brady in 2024, demonstrating her continued versatility and enduring presence in the entertainment industry.
