Melissa Porter was born on December 18, 1972, in Wythenshawe, Manchester, England, to parents of Italian-Czech heritage. She developed an early interest in property through her parents’ house renovation projects in Cheshire. Prior to her television career, Porter pursued a degree in Retail Marketing from Manchester Metropolitan University. She subsequently applied her marketing knowledge in roles at prominent companies such as Marks & Spencer and Kodak, and as a brand manager for Playtex. Porter also gained experience as a professional relocator for a company based in Knightsbridge. These early career experiences provided a strong business foundation that would later inform her on-screen work in property and lifestyle television.
Her television career began in 2002 when she appeared on Granada TV’s “Men and Motors.” Soon after, Porter transitioned to the BBC, where she became known for presenting several popular property and lifestyle shows. She was a presenter for “To Buy or Not to Buy” on BBC One and “Escape to the Country” on BBC Two, a role she held from 2007 to 2014 across eight episodes. Other notable presenting credits include “Put Your Money Where Your House Is” (2004), “Get a New Life,” “Countryfile The Summer Diaries” (2007), “The Property List” (2008), and “Live the Dream: As Seen on Screen” (2009). Her work extended to writing property and lifestyle articles for publications such as the Mail on Sunday, Yahoo, Google, AOL, Cheshire Life, Moneywise, Homes Overseas, and CityAM.
Beyond presenting, Porter has applied her property expertise in practical ventures. She co-founded the property company Porter & Smurfit, which offers design and renovation services. She has personally renovated and sold numerous homes, including the sale of her Wandsworth house without an estate agent. Her most recent design project involved 11 luxury apartments on Kings Road, Chelsea, London. From 2013-2014, she was featured in TV commercials for Oral B toothpaste. Currently, Melissa also works as a transformational coach, empowering individuals to take control of their lives, and is a patron of the British Thyroid Foundation, supporting its work.
