Michael Patrick McGill was born on July 2, 1973, in Appleton, Wisconsin, as the first of two sons to Anne McGill and the late Gerald F. McGill, Jr. He grew up in the Fox River Valley, graduating from Appleton East High School in 1991. He attended the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point from 1991 to 1993 before enlisting in the U.S. Army Reserve. McGill completed Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and A.I.T. at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He subsequently transferred to the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh, where he earned a degree in Radio/TV/Film in 1995. McGill served in the 432nd Civil Affairs Battalion in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and was activated for Operation Joint Endeavor following the Dayton Peace Accord, serving overseas in Durdevik, Bosnia-Herzegovina, from January to July 1996.

After his military service, McGill began his career in the production department for WLUK-TV 11, the FOX affiliate in Green Bay, Wisconsin. His responsibilities included managing the audio board during newscasts and integrating local commercial breaks. The professional environment at WLUK-TV provided him with opportunities, such as witnessing The Green Bay Packers’ path to their Super Bowl XXXI victory. In April 1998, McGill relocated to Los Angeles to pursue acting. His initial television appearance was a minor role as “Babe Ruth” in a flashback scene on an episode of “Touched by an Angel” (1994). He currently resides in the San Fernando Valley with his wife, Amy, their son, Jake, and their dog, Elvis, continuing to develop his acting career.

Throughout his career, McGill has accumulated extensive credits across film and television. He is widely recognized for his role as Tommy (91 episodes) on Showtime’s “Shameless” (2011–2021) and as Kenny Anderson (3 episodes) in “The Office” (2007–2012). Other notable television appearances include “Bosch” (2016–2021), “Grey’s Anatomy” (2020), “The Rookie” (2022), and voice roles in animated series such as “What If…?” (2021) and “X-Men ’97” (2024), where he voiced General Ross. His filmography includes roles in “Annabelle Comes Home” (2019), “Jersey Boys” (2014), and “Grace and Grit” (2021). Additionally, McGill was a member of The Knightsbridge Theatre Company from 2003 to 2005, performing in various productions, including Shakespearean plays like “Twelfth Night” and modern works such as “Guys and Dolls.” He also held a membership in The Open Fist Theatre Company during 2006-2007.
