One of the UK’s most progressive activists, model and author Munroe Bergdorf is a leading voice on diversity, feminism and LGBTQ+ topics. A powerful and unstoppable force campaigning for Black, trans and queer rights, she has become globally recognised for her activism receiving numerous media accolades and gracing the covers of many of the world’s biggest magazines. Named in the top 25 most influential Women in Britain by British Vogue in 2020, she is a former GLAMOUR Woman of the Year, and was recently named as British Vogue’s New Contributing Editor. She also sits on the Diversity and Inclusion Board of L’Oréal Paris and is a UN Women UK Changemaker.
Bergdorf was born in Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex to an English mother and Jamaican father, and was assigned male at birth. After starting her career in fashion PR, she began gender transitioning at the age of 24. She began modelling after being motivated by the fashion industry’s lack of diversity, and garnered attention in 2017 as the first transgender model to front a UK L’Oréal campaign.
As a model she has since starred in campaigns for the likes of Calvin Klein, Uniqulo, Illamasqua and Mulberry. In 2018 her debut television documentary What Makes a Woman was aired on Channel 4, exploring the changing perceptions of identity and gender in modern society. Two years later she signed a six-figure book deal with Bloomsbury for her book ‘Transitional’. Bergdorf has become a regular face on UK television since 2019, with frequent appearances as a guest commentator on This Morning and Good Morning Britain. In September 2021 she launched her podcast The Way We Are, where she interviews talent including Olly Alexander, Zara Larsson and Jameela Jamil.
