A three-time Olympian and eight-time Olympic medalist, Nathan Adrian is an American swimmer known for his success on the international stage. He has consistently finished near the top of Olympic and World Aquatics Championship competitions since 2008.
Born in Bremerton, Washington, Adrian graduated from the University of California, Berkeley as a five-time individual NCAA champion. He made his international debut in 2008 and made an appearance in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, winning gold in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. Adrian began to dominate swimming competitions, notably winning four gold medals at the 2010 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships and winning bronze in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay at the 2011 World Championships. Adrian then earned three medals at the 2012 London Olympics including a silver in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay with Michael Phelps, Cullen Jones, and Ryan Lochte. He also earned gold in the 100-meter freestyle final and another gold as the winning team in the 4×100-meter medley relay. Adrian continued his reign in the 2016 Rio Olympics, winning two gold and two bronze medals. He saw similar success at the World Championships in 2018 and 2019.
In January 2019, Adrian announced that he was diagnosed with testicular cancer and later underwent surgery. He made a full recovery and was set to make his fourth Olympic appearance in Tokyo. An icon of American swimming, Nathan Adrian is an athlete with a legendary career.
