At the Winter X Games in 2011 and 2012, he took home the gold and silver medals. At the age of 40, Baumgartner, a competitor in the 2014 Winter Olympics, won his first Olympic gold when he and teammate Lindsey Jacobellis won the first-ever Olympic mixed snowboard cross competition.
Baumgartner first competed in off-road racing in 2011, winning the “Stock Truck” Rookie of the Year award. In 2012, he moved up to the Pro Light trucks division. Baumgartner earned the gold medal in the Winter X Games XV in Aspen, Colorado, on January 30, 2011. The selection of Baumgartner for the 2014 Winter Olympics team was made public on December 5, 2013. Due to his consistency at World Cup competitions, he was selected over Seth Wescott for the snowboard cross A team for the Olympics. In the first heat race, Baumgartner got off to a bad start and finished fourth, just missing the top three who moved on to the quarterfinals.
Baumgartner took part in the snowboard cross competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, placing fourth overall. Together with his colleague Lindsey Jacobellis, Baumgartner earned an Olympic gold medal in 2022 for the first-ever mixed snowboard cross competition at the Winter Olympics.
