The wonderfully quirky creative Peter Farrelly is an award-winning director, screenwriter, producer, and author. He is best known for his filmmaking partnership with his brother, Bobby, and together they are credited as the Farrelly Brothers on such comedies as Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin, Shallow Hal, and There’s Something About Mary. He co-wrote and directed Green Book in 2018, which won him the Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture Oscars. He is also a long-time supporter of disability rights.
Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Farrelly initially studied accountancy at Providence College. After graduating he decided to pursue writing full-time and was encouraged to attend UMass Amherst. He then transferred to Columbia University where he earned a Master’s in Fine Arts. His film career began in 1994 when he and his brother, Bobby, as The Farrelly Brothers, wrote and directed the wacky comedy Dumb and Dumber. The duo went on to make a number of movies together, including There’s Something About Mary, Me, Myself & Irene, and Stuck on You. He made his first solo film, Green Book, in 2018, which went on to win two Oscars. In 2022 he wrote and directed the biographical war comedy-drama The Greatest Beer Run Ever. His TV credits include Unhitched, Loudermilk, and The Now.
Aside from his film work, Farrelly is a published novelist, and is the writer of Outside Providence, The Comedy Writer, and Abigail the Happy Whale. He also has an official website, peterfarrelly.com.
