Raja Gemini, also simply known as Raja, is the stage name of Sutan Amrull, a fabulously talented drag queen, make-up artist, and model. He is best known for his work on the reality TV show America’s Next Top Model, and for winning season three of the reality TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race, the first and only Asian American to have done so.
Born in California, and raised in Indonesia and the United States, Amrull was 16 when he became part of the Los Angeles drag scene in 1990, using the name Creoula. He attended California State University as an art student, then decided to pursue a career in make-up and female impersonation, creating Raja while experimenting with his own personal style identity and obsession with fashion and club culture. He worked for MAC cosmetics for nine years, and between 2005 and 2009 was a make-up artist on the reality TV show America’s Next Top Model. In 2011 she became a contestant on the third season of RuPaul’s Drag race, going on to win and be crowned America’s Next Drag Superstar. For a short time, she hosted her own WOW series, Raja Drawja, in which she had an offscreen conversation with a queen while drawing her. She has also appeared in a number of music videos, working with artists such as Blondie, Erasure, and Gloria Estefan, and has guest starred in animated form on The Simpsons. She has also released a number of records, including her debut, Diamond Crowned Queen, which peaked at No. 35 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs in 2011.
