Actress Rati Gupta is best known for her recurring role in the hit CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory as Rajesh Ramayan Koothrappali’s fiancée Anu. She also portrayed Rake in the Josh Hutcherson/Seth Rogen produced comedy Future Man for HULU, and will soon prove her versatile acting chops in the Netflix drama series Unbelievable from Erin Brockovich writer Susannah Grant alongside Toni Collette. Before launching her acting career Gupta was a successful hip hop dancer who appeared in videos for Flo Rida and Lupe Fiasco.
Born in Michigan City, Indiana, Gupta was multi-talented from an early age, and was a dancer on the UDA’s “All Star” dance team as well as being a promising tennis and golf player. Whilst studying at Northwestern University she joined Boomshaka, the universities drum, rhythm and dance band, and went on to become the group’s director. Her love of dance – in particular hip hop dance, inspired by the style of Janet Jackson – took over and she relocated to Los Angeles to become a leading dancer at The Edge studio. Gupta began to attend acting classes around the same time, but not seeing roles that represented her she began to write and perform her own stand up. She toured the country and was listed on the “Emerging Screenwriters Top 100 List” and Backstage nominated her show Not Another Teen Solo Show as one of the Top 3 Performances of the New York International Fringe Festival.
Now a familiar face across the world thanks to her memorable turn as Anu in the Emmy Award-winning comedy The Big Bang Theory – which averaged 20 million viewers in the US alone – her acting career has taken off big time, and expect to see much more of Gupta in the near future.
