Richard Makin is also known as the School Night Vegan. He is a successful vegan author, blogger, and recipe-developer and was named Best Vegan Blogger at the 2020 Vegan Food & Living Magazine Reader Awards. He is particularly well-known for his Instagram account, which has more than 210,000 followers. He is the food editor for Wicked Healthy, a regular writer for Olive magazine and has been featured in the BBC Good Food Magazine. He has also worked as a recipe developer for the luxury spa-hotel chain, Harbour. His first book, Anything You Can Cook, I Can Cook Vegan, is to be published by Bloomsbury in April 2023.
Makin has been a vegetarian for most of his life, but he upgraded to full veganism in 2017. At the time, he spent his weekends running London’s first artisan ice-cream-sandwich street-food stall, which left precious little time for getting the hang of learning to cook without any animal produce. He got around this by being a ‘school-night vegan’. This inspired him to start a blog under that name, initially as a food journal, keeping a record of what he ate and the discoveries he was making.
His journal quickly became a fully-fledged brand across multiple social media platforms and attracted the attention of magazines, websites, and even hotel chains, all of whom wanted Makin to share his amazing, delicious recipes with them. His book deal with Bloomsbury, one of the UK’s most prestigious publishers, is yet another step in Makin’s inspiring journey.
