Rob Liefeld is an American comic book creator who rose to fame in the 90’s, being best known for creating the character Cable alongside writer Louise Simonson and the character Deadpool with writer Fabian Nicieza. Liefeld became interested in comic book creation after taking fundamental art courses in high-school as well as attending comic book conventions at the nearby Disneyland Hotel, meeting creators such as George Perez, John Romita Jr, Jim Shooter, Bob Layton, Mike Zeck and Marv Wolfman – some of which you can see influences in Liefeld’s own work.
Liefeld then gained popularity due to his work on Marvel Comics’ The New Mutants and X-Force, where he gained employment after travelling to conventions and showing editors samples, which got interest from both Marvel and DC. Liefeld was subsequently asked to illustrate an eight-page Avengers backup story featuring the Black Panther, at only 19-years-old. The artist has gained so much notoriety in the community that he was even interviewed by Stan Lee in the documentary series The Comic Book Greats, discussing how he broke into the industry and developed his drawing technique.
Currently, Liefeld continues to work for some of the greatest comic book companies in the world, as well as lifting up others in the industry. Recently, Liefeld has congratulated Finn Wittrock on being cast as Guy Gardener in HBO’s television adaptation of Green Lantern. Liefeld also discusses his political opinions over on his Twitter, which has over 100 thousand followers.
