United Kingdom Sarah Outen, a British adventurer and author, has completed challenging expeditions across oceans and continents, inspiring others through her journeys and becoming an advocate for outdoor exploration.

Born on May 26, 1985, Sarah Outen pursued an education at Stamford High School before reading Biology at St Hugh’s College, Oxford, where she began rowing in 2004. Her career as an adventurer began in 2009 with a solo rowing voyage across the Indian Ocean from Australia to Mauritius. This challenge followed the sudden death of her father in 2006, serving as a way to process her grief. The journey spanned 124 days, 14 hours, and 9 minutes, making her the first woman and youngest person to complete a solo crossing of the Indian Ocean. She subsequently earned three Guinness World Records and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. This initial expedition also raised over £30,000 for Arthritis Care and Arthritis Research Campaign.
From 2011 to 2015, Sarah undertook her ‘London2London: Via the World’ expedition. This endeavor involved rowing, cycling, and kayaking a loop of the northern hemisphere, covering approximately 20,000 miles. Key milestones during this journey included becoming the first woman to row solo from Japan to Alaska in 2013, a 150-day, 3,750-mile crossing of the North Pacific. Her route also included cycling across Europe and Asia, kayaking 2500 km along the Aleutian Islands and Alaskan Peninsula with Justine Curgenven in 2014, and cycling across North America to the East Coast. Although her attempt to row the North Atlantic in 2015 was cut short by Hurricane Joaquin, she successfully completed her overall loop back in London on November 3, 2015. Her experiences have been documented in two books, ‘A Dip in the Ocean’ and ‘Dare to Do,’ and an award-winning film, ‘Home.’
Beyond her expeditions, Sarah Outen works as a therapist and motivational speaker, sharing lessons on resilience and the importance of engaging with challenges. She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2011 Birthday Honours for services to rowing, conservation, and charity, and received an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Leicester in 2016. Her adventures have allowed her to engage with diverse communities, sharing stories and encouraging others to pursue their own challenges, regardless of their scale.
