About

Smosh was founded in 2002 by Anthony Padilla, who initially created a website for Flash animations. He was later joined by Ian Hecox, and together they began posting videos on YouTube in 2005. Early success came from lip-sync videos, with their “Pokémon Theme Music Video” briefly becoming the most-viewed video on YouTube. This early virality and their subsequent transition to original sketch comedy established them as one of the platform’s leading channels. Their content evolved to include series like “Food Battle” and “If X Were Real,” which showcased their comedic talent and growing production capabilities.

Over the years, Smosh expanded its presence with multiple YouTube channels, including Smosh Pit for variety content and Smosh Games for gaming-related material. In 2011, the brand was acquired by Defy Media, leading to further diversification and the inclusion of additional cast members. However, creative differences led to Anthony Padilla’s departure in 2017. Following Defy Media’s abrupt shutdown in 2018, Smosh briefly became independent before being acquired by Rhett & Link’s Mythical Entertainment in 2019. In 2023, Padilla and Hecox repurchased a majority stake in Smosh, re-establishing it as an independent entity and marking Padilla’s return.

Throughout their career, Smosh has been recognized for its innovation and longevity in online content creation. They have consistently ranked among the most popular and influential YouTube channels, achieving the most-subscribed status three separate times. Their impact extends beyond YouTube into films, comic books, mobile applications, and live performances. Smosh has also actively participated in philanthropic endeavors, using their platform to support various charities and social causes. Their journey reflects the evolution of digital entertainment, from nascent online videos to a comprehensive media brand.
