The amazing Sonya Renee Taylor is an award-winning poet, activist, bestselling author, and leader. She is the founder and executive officer of The Body Isn’t An Apology, a digital media and education company promoting radical self-love and body empowerment as the foundational tool for social justice and global transformation.
Taylor has a degree in Sociology and an MSA in Organisational Management, and uses her work to disrupt systems of inequity from an intersectional, radical self-love and global justice framework. Her work has been seen, heard, and read on many media outlets, including HBO, BET, MTV, PBS, CNN, The New York Times, New York Magazine, Huffington Post, USA Today, and Vogue Australia. She is a regular collaborator and artist with organisations such as Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Advocates for Youth 1in3 Campaign, Association for Size Diversity and Health, Binge Eating Disorders Association (BEDA), and Greater than AIDS Campaign.
Taylor has won multiple National and International poetry slams, including the 2004 US National Individual Poetry Slam competition, the 2005 DC/Baltimore Grand Slam competition, and the 2006 Four Continents International Slam competition, and has performed for audiences across the globe, including in prisons, mental health treatment facilities, homeless shelters, universities, festivals and public schools. She released her first book in 2010, A Little Truth on Your Shirt. Her second book, The Body is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love, was published in 2018.
