About

Steven Norman Howey, born on October 26, 1971, in Sunderland, England, commenced his professional football career at Newcastle United, signing a contract on December 11, 1989. Initially playing as a striker in youth and reserve teams, he transitioned to a center-back under Ossie Ardiles. Howey was an integral part of Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United squad that won the First Division championship in the 1992–93 season, securing promotion to the Premier League. During his tenure at Newcastle, the club achieved Premier League runner-up positions twice, in 1995–96 and 1996–97, and was FA Cup runner-up in 1997–98 and 1998–99. He made 191 league appearances for Newcastle United, scoring 6 goals.

In August 2000, Howey transferred to newly-promoted Manchester City for £2,000,000. He spent three seasons at Manchester City, contributing to their immediate return to the Premier League in 2001–02 as First Division champions. He scored 11 goals in 94 league appearances for Manchester City. A notable moment was scoring a late equalizer against Manchester United in 2001. Following his time at Manchester City, Howey had brief spells with Leicester City (2003-2004), Bolton Wanderers (2004), New England Revolution in Major League Soccer (2004), and Hartlepool United (2005), marking the end of his sixteen-year professional playing career. He earned four caps for the England national team between 1994 and 1996 and was part of the Euro 96 squad.

Post-playing career, Howey transitioned into coaching and media roles. He briefly managed Crook Town in 2006 and coached at Bishop Auckland. He also served as a youth team coach at Middlesbrough and became head coach at East Durham College Football Development Centre in 2010. In media, Howey has worked as a sports radio presenter for Total Sport and BBC Radio Newcastle. He also featured in the ITV series ‘Harry’s Heroes’ in 2019 and 2020. In December 2024, Howey publicly shared that medical tests indicated cognitive decline, which he attributed to heading footballs during his career, leading to his involvement in legal action against sporting authorities.
