Rapper Trent Pedrana, better known as That Kid Kearve, has come a long way since he was 15 and posting webcam freestyles on YouTube. Over 400,000 people have seen the first video he ever made with a webcam, but it wasn’t until 2018, when he hit number one on the iTunes rap and hip hop charts, that his music career really took off. The following year, the rapper from Cranebrook, in the Australian state of New South Wales, put out his first album by himself, “Growing up in the West.” But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been working hard. You could spend hours going through all of his YouTube freestyles, and you still wouldn’t see everything. When you add up the singles, music videos, features, and a joint album with TKO and Fortay that came out in 2018, you can see how much time and effort he puts into his craft.
For Pedrana, putting out his first album was a huge step forward. The main theme of the record is getting older. Collaborator Jimmy the Gent provided his West Coast-style beats, and Pedrana felt that everything seemed to fit together just right. If you listen to every song on the album, most of them are about growing up in the West of Australia between the ages of 16 and 18, or even younger. Pedrana and Chloe Jackman, his long-term partner, bought a house in Sydney in April of 2021. Three months later, they had a baby girl. Pedrana makes personalized videos for his fans on Cameo.
