When Brian Delaurenti and Johnathan Dahl, or The Gay Beards, initially shared a photo of themselves with flowers adorning both of their beards back in July of 2014, they had no idea they were about to embark on a massively successful artistic venture. Their Instagram account now has over 250,000 followers and their YouTube channel has over 25,000 subscribers.
Since they met at the age of eight, Delaurenti and Dahl have been great friends. The Portland-based buddies create content based on their wit, ingenuity, and friendship. The are both openly homosexual and don’t take their friendship for granted, as they know how important each other’s support was in their self-discoveries. The two have talked about how crucial it was to recognise similar fears that led to them letting their defences down with each other when they were younger. Delaurenti and Dahl consider themselves brothers, and their bond is evident in The Gay Beards story.
Anyone who has seen one of their videos can’t help but notice Delaurenti and Dahl’s genuine friendship; in fact, these childhood best friends grew up just down the street from each other. Delaurenti is now a painter/photographer, while Johnathan is a musician (and “professional pizza slinger”). Clearly, their bond has always been based on creativity, and their signature decorative motif of covering their beards with craft store glitter has gained them worldwide acclaim. The video “How To GLITTER BEARD” on their YouTube account has nearly 700,000 views.
