About

Born Timothy Leonard Dalton Leggett on March 21, 1946, in Colwyn Bay, North Wales, Timothy Dalton moved to Manchester, England, with his family in the late 1940s. His early fascination with acting was solidified at 16 after seeing a production of “Macbeth.” He subsequently joined Michael Croft’s National Youth Theater and later studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) from 1964-1966. Leaving RADA early to join the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Dalton quickly transitioned into professional roles in television, notably appearing in the 14-episode series “Sat’day While Sunday” (1967) and making his film debut as King Philip of France in “The Lion in Winter” (1968).

Dalton gained international recognition as the fourth actor to portray James Bond, starring in “The Living Daylights” (1987) and “Licence to Kill” (1989). His approach to the iconic role emphasized the character’s grittier and more serious aspects, aligning with Ian Fleming’s original literary vision. Despite a commitment for three Bond films, legal disputes delayed production, leading to his departure from the role in 1994. Throughout his career, Dalton consistently returned to his roots in classical theatre, performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Prospect Theatre Company, taking on lead roles in productions like “Romeo and Juliet” and “King Lear.”

Beyond Bond, Dalton has built a diverse body of work across various genres. He starred as Mr. Rochester in the popular BBC miniseries “Jane Eyre” (1983) and Rhett Butler in the CBS miniseries “Scarlett” (1994). His filmography includes other notable roles such as Prince Barin in “Flash Gordon” (1980), Neville Sinclair in “The Rocketeer” (1991), and Simon Skinner in the action-comedy “Hot Fuzz” (2007). In recent years, he has taken on significant television roles, including Sir Malcolm Murray in “Penny Dreadful” (2014-2016), the Chief in “Doom Patrol” (2019-2023), and Donald Whitfield in “1923” (2023-2025). His distinctive voice has also been featured in animated films like “Toy Story 3” (2010), where he voiced Mr. Pricklepants.
