Tino Martinez is known for being one of the top first basemen in Major League Baseball of his time. Since joining the historic team the Boston Red Sox in 1985, his career has gone from strength to strength, and Martinez has made a name for himself as a top sportsman and athlete.
Beginning his time on the field with the Red Sox, Martinez went on to play for a variety of other fantastic teams, including the Seattle Mariners, The New York Yankees, St Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Devil Rays, finishing his career back with the Yankees in 2005 before retiring from the sport and moving into broadcasting instead- he made the move to ESPN, working on Baseball Tonight before switching to the YES Network as a colour commentator in 2010. Beloved by the Yankees in particular, he led the team to the World Series championships in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000, and even when he joined the St Louis Cardinals after his initial time with the Yankees, upon his return to their home stadium as a visiting player, he was greeted with a stadium wide standing ovation in recognition of his part in the Yankees legacy before being called back for a curtain call after the game, a rare honour for a visiting player. As a further recognition, he received the 2007 Pride Of The Yankees Award at the New York Yankees Homecoming Banquet, and seven years later, was awarded a plaque in Monument Park. Martinez is also one of the few baseball players to hold an Olympic gold medal, earned in the 1988 Summer Olympics, the last time baseball was featured as a demonstration sport.
