Born on August 27, 1961, in Austin, Texas, Thomas Carlyle Ford spent his early years in Houston and San Marcos before his family relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico, when he was 11. He briefly attended Bard College at Simon’s Rock and New York University before focusing his studies on interior architecture at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City. His time interning at Chloé in Paris ignited his interest in fashion in the late 1980s. Despite graduating with a degree in architecture, Ford pursued a career in fashion, starting as a design assistant for Cathy Hardwick and later working at Perry Ellis. His pivotal move to Milan in 1990 marked the beginning of his influential career in European fashion.
Ford joined Gucci in 1990 as chief women’s ready-to-wear designer, at a time when the company faced financial difficulties. His role quickly expanded to include menswear, shoes, fragrances, advertising, and store design. By 1994, he was promoted to Creative Director of Gucci, where he was credited with revitalizing the brand’s image and significantly increasing its sales and value. When Gucci acquired Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) in 1999, Ford also took on the role of Creative Director for YSL, where he continued to receive critical acclaim and numerous awards for his designs. He departed the Gucci group in 2004, having transformed its financial standing and global presence.
In 2005, Ford launched his eponymous luxury brand, encompassing menswear, beauty, eyewear, and accessories. Beyond fashion, he ventured into filmmaking, establishing his production company, Fade to Black, in 2005. His directorial debut, “A Single Man” (2009), garnered significant critical attention, including an Oscar nomination for lead actor Colin Firth. He followed this with “Nocturnal Animals” (2016), which also received praise and awards. In 2022, his beauty brand was acquired by Estée Lauder for $2.8 billion, solidifying his impact on both the fashion and business worlds.
