The versatile middle-distance runner Thomas “Tom” Benjamin Lancashire is best known for representing Great Britain at the Beijing 2008 Olympics in the 1500m event. He is a life member of the Bolton Harriers, and recently moved into coaching after having been coached himself by Steve Cram. His personal best running times are: 1:45.76 in the 800m, 3:33.96 in the 1500m, 3:53.39 in the One Mile, 8:00.95 in the 3000m (indoor), and 13:34.44 in the 5000m.
Born and raised in Bolton, Lancashire was always a naturally talented sportsman, having shown great ability in football, swimming, cricket, ice hockey and snowboarding. But it was athletics that really proved to be his calling, and he began his career after being spotted in a school cross country race, and was invited to join the Bolton Harriers. He won the 1500m title at the English Schools’ Athletics Championships in 2002, and went on to represent Great Britain at the European Junior Championships in the 1500m, winning silver. In 2004, he competed in the World Junior Championships in the 1500m setting a personal best time of 3:42.48. He then moved to the US to study exercise science at Florida State University. After graduating, he continued to compete around the world.
