The first New Zealander ever to bowl a hat-trick in the Cricket World Cup, Trent Boult is a cricketer who plays domestically for Northern Districts and internationally for New Zealand. He bats right-handed and pitches left-arm fast-medium. Boult is a left-arm fast medium swing bowler who makes up for his lack of height with deceptive pace and the ability to swing the ball both ways. Boult’s key weapon is the inswinger to the right-hander. In a radio interview in 2013, former New Zealand captain Jeremy Coney described Boult as the best bowling discovery since Shane Bond. Boult is also recognised for catching one-handed catches with either hand.
In December 2011, Boult made his New Zealand Test debut, and in July 2012, he made his One Day International debut. Since 2013, he and Tim Southee have created a strong opening bowling partnership, capturing 46 percent of all wickets between them. In 2014, Boult joined Richard Hadlee, Chris Martin, and Iain O’Brien as the fourth test bowler to capture 30+ wickets in consecutive years. He was tied for the most wickets in the 2015 Cricket World Cup.
Boult became the third New Zealand bowler to bowl a hat-trick in one-day internationals in November 2018, and the first New Zealand bowler to bowl a hat-trick in the Cricket World Cup in June 2019. In the second match against Bangladesh in January 2022, he became only the fourth New Zealand bowler to reach 300 wickets in Test cricket.
