Also known as Unk, Unkle Adams is a rapper and motivational speaker from Regina, Canada. Since 2013, he has released a series of mixtapes and albums that largely exude a positive message. He became famous, or perhaps infamous, in 2018 thanks to his YouTube series, At Least a Million, which documents his struggle to establish himself in the music industry. He began the series by announcing that his efforts had left him with a six-figure debt and that he wanted to try and right this by gaining at least a million Spotify streams. The plan eventually worked and his track ‘Original’ has now been streamed nearly 1.5 million times. His journey hasn’t been without its pitfalls, however. His admission about his staggering debt caused him to become the subject of many memes and brought plenty of comments from people who weren’t taken with his unique style. That said, all publicity is good publicity, and the number of people curious to find out what all the fuss was about can’t have helped Adam’s streaming figures (as well as streams, he currently has over 7 million views of his YouTube content).
Adams was born Curtis Adams in 1986. Whilst trying to forge a career as a rapper, he worked as a heavy machinery operator. His musical debut came in 2007 with a mixtape called North of Dewdney. His most recent releases include the 2018 album The Underdog and the 2020 single Superpowers. Whilst his original lyrical style and use of electro-swing may divide hip-hops fans, Unkle Adams has definitely achieved what he set out to do.
