The wonderful sportsman Varlam Liparteliani is a judoka, who competes in the -90kg and -100kg weight category. He is a 3x European Championships Champion, a 3x World Masters Champion, a 5x IJF Grand Slam Champion, a 5x IJF Grand Prix Champion, an Olympic Silver-medalist, a 3x World Championships Silver-medalist, and a 2x European Games Silver-medalist. He is a 3rd dan black belt and has been ranked No. 1 in the world.
Born and raised in the Georgian region of the former Soviet Union, Liparteliani started judo when he was 11-years-old. He went on to compete at cadet and junior level, and when he was 17 he took Bronze in the -81 kg weight class at the 2006 European Cadet Championships. He moved up to the -90kg weight category and in 2007 won Gold at the European Junior Championships. He successful defended his title the following year, as well as taking Gold at the World Juniors Championships. Between 2009 and 2016 he competed at senior level taking eight IJF Grand Prix medals (including five Golds); seven IJF Grand Slam medals (including five Golds); a World Masters Bronze; seven European Championships medals (including three Golds); three World Championships medals; a European Games Silver; and he also took the Olympic Silver for Georgia at Rio 2016.
From 2017 Liparteliani moved up to the -100kg weight category. He continued to add to his impressive medal tally, taking three World Championships medals; a European Games Silver; a European Championships Silver; three World Masters Golds and a Bronze; seven more IJF Grand Slam medals (including two Golds); and an IJF Grand Prix Bronze.
Liparteliani regularly connects with his legions of followers and fans through Facebook, and Instagram, posting pictures and comments about his life both on and off the mat.
