DJ and dance pioneer David Mancuso has passed away at the age of 72, leaving behind a vast legacy of electronic music and club culture.
Friend and collaborator Craig Shifty broke the news in a touching Facebook post. Shifty said of David Mancuso: “He will be GREATLY missed but, thankfully, he left the world a lasting vibrant legacy that continues to inspire and influence countless generations of music lovers and clubbers.”
Mancuso founded New York City’s The Loft club in 1970, and it swiftly became known as the ‘first underground dance party’. The club was exceptional for its socially progressive attitude, often playing host to a vibrant and enthusiastic LGBT crowd with Mancuso’s invite-only event Love Saves the Day.
The entire dance community is in mourning for David Mancuso’s loss, and many high profile individuals from the industry have spoken out in grieving. Gilles Peterson said Mancuso “defined alternative club culture.” DJ Spinner paid tribute to him as dance music’s Godfather. Kerri Chandler was “heartbroken” to hear the news.

In a rare interview, Mancuso told Red Bull Music Academy that The Loft was never about making money. The Loft was about social progress. At The Loft, he said, “As long as you act like a human being you can do what you want.”
David Mancuso will be missed as the dance music community builds on his legacy, and tries never to forget his progressive values.
