Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for hip hop drama The Get Down.
The Get Down depicts New York at the musical intersection at the twilight of disco and the dawn of hip hop. The frenetic trailer features MN2S artist Grandmaster Flash in a prominent role. The DJ, portrayed by Mamoudou Athie in the series, is set to be a major presence in the show. In the trailer, Grandmaster Flash’s character is seen teaching a group of young DJs the ropes of spinning while they kneel before him in true samurai style.
As well as being a character in the show, Grandmaster Flash is heavily involved in The Get Down behind the scenes as an associate producer and adviser.
The show is set to explore the birth of rap with unparalleled intensity and accuracy, with visceral filmmaker Baz Luhrmann in the director’s chair, and hip hop historian Nelson George on the writing staff.
The Get Down is set to follow a ragtag group of teenagers living in the South Bronx in the late 1970s. Over the course of the series, their story will intertwine with the fate of the city that, in some of its darkest days, gave birth to a world-changing movement and a genre that would dominate the airwaves for decades to come.
With first wave hip hop artists like Eric B & Rakim, Run DMC and Grandmaster Flash himself more popular than ever, The Get Down is sure to be a huge success.
