Grandmaster Flash opens up about his associate producer role in the upcoming Netflix series The Get Down.
In the clip, Grandmaster Flash discusses the moment executive producer Baz Luhrmann told the hip hop pioneer a major character in the show would be based on him.
Flash goes on to praise the performance of Mamoudou Athie, who plays the young Grandmaster as he teaches some even younger DJs the ropes of turntablism. Athie speaks of what a privilege it is to portray one of hip hop’s founding fathers.
The Get Down is set to premiere on August 12 2016. The show follows the life of Grandmaster Flash as the last days of disco give way to the birth of hip-hop in 1970s New York.
Alongside fellow hip-hop legend Nas and writer Nelson George, Grandmaster Flash is excited turn what he calls “the ingredients of hip-hop” into the visual presentation of The Get Down.
One of the show’s other stars, Shameik Moore, talks of how amazing it is that he had the chance to learn from the Grandmaster himself. Book Grandmaster Flash for a lesson of your own.
