Black Eyed Peas have returned following a five-year hiatus with ‘Yesterday’, a track that pays tribute to their hip-hop heritage.
Somewhat unexpectedly, the track harks back to their pre-Fergie rap sounds, sampling and referencing numerous legends of the genre including De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Ice-T and Pete Rock & CL Smooth. The return also marks their 20th anniversary this year. Listen to the track in the player below.
The group have sold a staggering 76 million albums and singles across the globe, making them one of the biggest-selling acts of all time, with several multi-Platinum hits and No. 1 records in multiple countries. They have won several Grammy awards and performed at the Super Bowl and dominated the charts throughout the 2000s.
Their last album was 2010’s ‘The Beginning’, which included singles ‘The Time (Dirty Bit)’ and ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’. They last performed together in November 2011. Recording for their upcoming seventh studio album began in 2013, and they have previously shared two other new tracks that are mooted to be included on the LP: ‘Yesterday’ and ‘Awesome’.
