Nomi Ruiz has announced her next mixtape, Borough Gypsy 2: Nomi X Dilla.

The mixtape will be a full-length tribute to the late James DeWitt Yancey, aka Jay Dee, bka J Dilla. Dilla made his mark as a producer and MC in the Detroit group Slum Village, and later earned the nickname ‘The Greatest Hip Hop Producer Of All Time’ after a string of solo albums, vocal and instrumental.

Nomi announced the tape via The Source, telling them that the slogan on the popular J Dilla t-shirt (‘J DILLA CHANGED MY LIFE’) really rang true for her when she heard his music for the first time.

The video for the mixtape’s first single is out already. The song, ‘Bullet Proof’, features the former Hercules & Love Affair singer rapping on Dilla’s ‘Over The Breaks’ instrumental from his widely acclaimed posthumous album The Shining.

Of J Dilla’s masterpiece Donuts, Nomi told The Source: “It reinstated my belief that music could, at times, be something channeled through chosen creators who had no choice but to make music because it possessed them.”

Borough Gypsy 2: Nomi X Dilla will be released in June.
