De La Soul’s crowdfunding campaign for their next album has raised over $600k, becoming the second most funded project on Kickstarter at the time of their campaign closing.
After building a career on sampling other artists – and having to pay lots of royalties and fight various legal battles in the process – they decided to sample themselves for their new record.
They have been recording session musicians for the past two years, generating over 200 hours of material, which they will now sample to create brand new tracks to rap over. Damon Albarn, 2 Chainz and David Byrne are amongst the guests set to appear on the album.
Rewards for backers included the chance to record a skit for the album with the group, to dine with them at their favourite restaurant and to go crate-digging with DJ Maseo.
The trio also debuted a new track with Nas recently, ‘God It’ – a free download which you can listen to below.
