Thinking of booking Christopher Biggins? Take a look below at some of his best career moments.
Christopher Biggins is one of the UK’s most recognisable actors, starring in some of the biggest TV shows and adaptations of the 20th Century. Most recently, he’s been in the public eye again following an appearance on Channel Five’s Celebrity Big Brother, but he also has a long history of on-stage work and has even starred in the odd feature film.
He’s also on the talent roster here at top talent agency MN2S, and available to book as a celebrity guest for all sorts of events, from charity galas to corporate conferences – contact us if you’d like to find out more about booking him.
This bastion of the English acting scene has been active for almost 50 years, so we’ve taken a look at some of the best of his many roles over the years.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Although not one of his biggest parts as an actor, The Rocky Horror Picture Show must surely be the most popular production that he has ever been in. Playing a bit part as one of The Transylvanians, Biggins has since capitalised on his involvement with the cult classic by providing narration and appearances at some of the many productions of the show which take place every year.
A tribute to science fiction and the B movies of the 1930s, 40s and 50s, the film was a flop when it was released, but soon spawned a cult following. People began dressing up to attend showings of the film and getting involved with audience participation, much to the bemusement of some critics.
Poldark
We know what you’re thinking – Christopher Biggins isn’t in Poldark! The TV series currently gracing our screens is, in fact, a remake of a show from the 1970s, in which Biggins played Rev. Osbourne Whitworth, who does not feature in the new series.
Originally based on a series of books written by Winston Graham, the story centres around Ross Poldark, an officer in the British Army who returns home to find that his fiancée believed him dead and is about to marry another man.
In the books and the original TV series, Rev. Whitworth was a loud, arrogant and adulterous vicar whose sermons terrified his parishioners into submission – played to a T by Biggins.
Porridge
The much loved British sitcom Porridge ran for three seasons, and was set inside the walls of a prison; the name derived from the slang term to ‘do porridge’ or serve a prison sentence.
Biggins played Lukewarm, an effeminate, rotund and calm young man serving time for reasons unknown, and in the sitcom is often seen knitting and fussing over his elderly cell mate. Providing a lot of light relief, his character is also notoriously bad at cooking, although enthusiastic about having a go anyway.
The character is gay, as is Biggins himself, although at the time that the series was aired he was not openly so, and while the stereotype seems somewhat outdated these days, it’s no less the funny for it.
I, Claudius
Adapted from the novels of Robert Graves, I, Claudius was a TV mini-series which aired in 1976 and starred many of British television’s most respected names. Following the history of the city of Rome, the show had an enormous cast and the labyrinthine alliances and enemies which the show traces made it something of an epic.
Biggins played the Emperor Nero in the show, voted one of the British public’s best ever TV shows, and starred alongside such stalwarts of TV acting as Siân Phillips, Brian Blessed, George Baker, Margaret Tyzack, John Hurt, Patricia Quinn, Ian Ogilvy, Kevin McNally, Patrick Stewart, and John Rhys-Davies.
These are just a few examples of the incredible variety of roles which Christopher has played, from the comic to the epic and everything in between. The position which he holds as a member of acting royalty would surely make him a fascinating guest for anyone who remembers his acting heyday in the 1970s – and many who have caught up on it since!
