Duncan Beiny, known professionally as DJ Yoda, was born in London, England, in 1977. He attended Highgate School and later studied English and American literature at the University of Warwick from 1995 to 1998. During his university years, he began performing at Mojo, a popular hip hop and soul night at the student’s union. After graduating, he started releasing underground demo mix-tapes to small music shops, which led to Antidote Records requesting an official mixtape. This resulted in the release of ‘How to Cut & Paste Mix Tape Vol.1’. His career is characterized by a distinctive animated musical style created through the extensive use of samples.
DJ Yoda’s career includes significant achievements and collaborations. In 2001, he won a DMC DJ of the Year award in the Scratch DJ category and was nominated for Best UK Hip-Hop DJ at the UK Hip-Hop Awards. He has been recognized by Q magazine as one of the ‘Ten DJs To See Before You Die’ and has toured internationally with artists such as Goldie and the Scratch Perverts. His debut album, ‘The Amazing Adventures of DJ Yoda’, featuring guest vocalists like Biz Markie and Sway, was released in 2006. He also contributed scratches to Danger Mouse and Jemini’s ‘Ghetto Pop Life’.
Throughout his career, DJ Yoda has engaged in various media projects and special performances. He has been a frequent guest on BBC Radio 1, appearing with Steve Lamacq and Annie Mac, and received a Sony Radio Academy Award nomination in 2009. In 2010, he won the 9th Annual Independent Music Awards for Contemporary Classic Album with the Heritage Orchestra. Projects include ‘DJ Yoda Goes to the Sci-Fi Movies’ for the BFI’s ‘Sonic Cinema’ event in 2014, and presenting the first audio-visual radio mix on BBC Radio 6 Music. He performed at Banksy’s Dismaland in 2015 and released his album ‘Home Cooking’ in 2019, featuring artists like Nubya Garcia and Joel Culpepper.
