Duncan Beiny aka DJ Yoda is no ordinary scratch DJ. For decades this audio visual pioneer has been recognised around the world as one of the finest to ever spin plates: his seminal How To Cut & Paste series prompted Q Magazine to declare him “one of the ten DJs to see before you die”, while Hip Hop Connection voted him “one of the top three DJs in the world”. Since then he secured a 6 Mix residency on BBC Radio 6 Music, after doing a first ever audio visual mix on the station, and continues to showcases his learned and wide taste and DJ flair with his enduringly popular How To Cut & Paste mix series. Mixing up every conceivable genre as well as cutting the best Sci-Fi movie moments with 80s electro, or YouTube viral hits with contemporary hip-hop, there really is no one like Yoda.
The past decade has seen Yoda evolve from hip-hop beginnings, using his world renowned turntable skills and a truckload of influences as diverse as funk, trap, pop, reggae, drum ‘n’ bass, into a producer of equal repute who makes unashamed party music. As well as countless singles, albums like his sophomore effort ‘Chop Suey’ won critical acclaim, whilst Yoda has also toured a ground breaking live hip-hop band, Breakfast of Champions. Evoking the golden age of hip-hop, the band features a host of musicians and has played should out shows at esteemed venues like London’s Jazz Café. Finally realising Yoda’s long-held vision for a live hip-hop band, the finishing touches are currently being put to Breakfast of Champions’ debut album, due for release in early 2015.
