Habibi Funk is the DJ alias of Jannis Stürtz. With a focus on funk, jazz, soul, world music and disco, Stürtz unearths hidden gems released in the 1960’s-80’s across the Middle East and North Africa, reissuing the records in eclectic compilations for the modern listener. He has organised exhibitions worldwide and currently curates a quarterly residency at London’s famous Jazz Café, unveiling his finds for an eager audience.
As a DJ, Stürtz only uses vinyl. His acclaimed performance at Boiler Room Beirut in 2017 thrust the name Habibi Funk into the limelight, beyond that of a label and curator. He has since performed sets all over the world, recently featuring at the likes of Montreux Jazz Festival; Dour Festival; XOYO; Soup Kitchen Manchester; Listen! Festival; Wanderlust Paris; Primavera Barcelona; Mono Fono Prague; ROAM Hong Kong; BRET Amsterdam; and Gretchen Berlin, amongst others.
Each of Habibi Funk’s official releases come with booklets, featuring extensive information on the featured artists, including liner notes, photos and interviews. Currently based in Berlin, the label continues to discover eclectic, stereotype-busting sounds from the Arab world, while Stürtz’s touring and phenomenal DJ sets bring them into the focus of a wider audience than ever previously thought possible.
