Born in North West London to parents of Myanma descent, Lucy Tun developed an early interest in classical music, later expanding her tastes to J-pop and K-pop during her teenage years. Her fascination with pop music solidified around age sixteen, notably influenced by artists like Adele. While studying Economics with Burmese at SOAS University of London, Tun released her debut long-play, “Good Nights Bad Stories,” in 2018 under the moniker LCYTN. Despite a promise to discontinue music, her growing recognition, even in Myanmar where fans identified her from billboards, led her to continue her artistic pursuits. This marked a significant turning point, reaffirming her commitment to music.
Following her debut, Tun continued to release music as LCYTN, including the beat tape “Bad Weather, Vol. 1” in 2019 and the three-track EP “Every Thursday Night / Spotlight” in 2020. In 2021, she began releasing music under her own name, Lucy Tun, while reserving LCYTN for her DJ sets, showcasing her versatility as both a vocalist and a DJ. This period saw the release of singles such as “Monarchy” (2021), a kawaii drill song, “314” (2022), reflecting on personal transitions, and “Another Week” (2022), a track born from post-breakup introspection. Her career gained further momentum in 2022 when she joined Loud LDN, a collective for women and genderqueer musicians, and became an active member of ESEA Music.
A notable milestone occurred in January 2023 with the release of “Kulture Klub,” a song inspired by her experiences at Paris Fashion Week. This track gained significant viral traction on TikTok after a shout-out from Bella Hadid, increasing her visibility substantially. The momentum continued with singles like “ADHD” and “Rabbit Hole” in 2023, leading to the release of her EP “Unreal” in October 2023, which garnered critical attention. Tun’s ability to blend diverse influences, from internet culture and autobiographical songwriting to various music genres, positions her as a distinctive voice in contemporary alternative pop. Her compositions often explore themes of identity, reality versus fantasy, and personal experiences, all while maintaining a refined and professional musical output.
