Elizabeth Small, known professionally as LUPA, is a techno producer and DJ hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area. Her artistic journey began with an academic background, including studies in Silicon Valley and Interdisciplinary Studies at Arizona State University. A pivotal moment in her career occurred during a summer job transfer to the U.K. for architectural studies, where she became immersed in London’s experimental techno scene. This experience spurred her to start creating her own music under the LUPA moniker, marking the beginning of her professional career in electronic music.
LUPA debuted in 2019 with “Cult,” a collaboration with U.S. bass duo DoBadlyy, showcasing a dark house sound with industrial influences. This was followed by self-released singles such as “Werehouse” in January 2020, which highlighted her signature pared-down, brooding techno style, and “Pain Killer” in May 2020, which adopted a more upfront, Motorik vibe. The release of “Werehouse: The Remixes” the following month, featuring various reinterpretations, further established her presence in the scene. Her early work captured the attention of deadmau5, leading to her signing with his mau5trap label. Her first EP with mau5trap, “Insatiable,” released in October 2021, expanded her sonic palette with tracks like “For the Ride” and “Darkness.” This period also saw her complete her university education.
Her career progression continued with “Takeover,” a single for L.A.’s Space Yacht Records in March, and a second mau5trap EP, “Salivation,” in June, which included tracks such as “The Day You Left Me” and “God Complex.” “Feel You (Beside Me),” another mau5trap single released in October, demonstrated a more danceable and uptempo aspect of her style. LUPA has since released a total of three EPs with mau5trap, including “Animosity” in spring 2023, and has performed at significant events like EDC Las Vegas, Imagine Festival (Atlanta), and Exchange LA. She has also opened for deadmau5 on selected dates of his US tour, solidifying her position as a rising talent in the techno genre.
